Moldovan president meeting first graduating class of Third Age University

Chisinau, Sep 26 /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu today discussed active and healthy ageing with a group of elderly and retired people, the first graduating class of the Third Age University, which guides the elderly to be active members of their community, the presidential press service has reported.
The program, dedicated to senior citizens, is carried out by the UNFPA in partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the Ministry of Education and Research and Moldova State University. All participants learned how to use modern technologies, communication and wellness.
"They told me that they really enjoyed their experience at the university, they want to have more such programs, they want to be involved in activities that are interesting for them and useful for society. We still have a lot of work to do. People who have worked and contributed for a lifetime deserve to have the security of tomorrow, to have access to effective public services, especially health services and a carefree life,'' the head of state said.
In recent years, the state has taken several actions for the elderly - the minimum and average pensions have been doubled, the winter allowance has been increased from 500 to 800 lei, the number of free medicines has increased by 40%, all pensioners with a pension under 5,000 lei received a 1,500 lei allowance in 2022 and 47 thousand pensioners received a one-off allowance of 3,000 lei in 2024.
