Moldovan president to have meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken

Chisinau, 28 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu on 29 May will have a meeting with Secretary of State of the United States Antony Blinken, who is to pay a visit to Chisinau. The head of state and Antony Blinken will discuss the support of the United States for Moldova’s modernization: economic development, consolidation of the energy security, implementation of the democratic reforms and the progress made in the European integration way, the presidential press service has reported.    

This will be the second visit to Moldova by Antony Blinken following the one from March 2022.  

The United States is one of the most important partners and supporters of Moldova. Starting from 1992, the U.S. Government has backed Moldova with financing exceeding 2.5 billion dollars. Since the unleashing of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the United States has provided Moldova with financial assistance worth 774 million dollars, of which 300 million dollars is meant for overcoming the energy crisis and strengthening the energy security. Eighty million dollars of these funds was used for the compensation of the invoices for natural gas and electricity for the low-income citizens and 135 million dollars is allocated to enhance the internal generation of electric energy and the construction of a high-tension line of 400 kV, through the power stations Straseni (Moldova) and Gutinas (Romania), which will connect Moldova to the electricity network of Romania, thus facilitating the integration into the European energy network.    

President Maia Sandu and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will hold a joint news conference at the Presidency’s headquarters at 17:30.
