PM, farmers from south Moldova discuss state of field crops

Chisinau, 18 July /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Dorin Recean has paid a working visit to the southern Moldova, along with Deputy PM, Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Vladimir Bolea. The prime minister discussed with local public authorities and local farmers the state of the field crops and the degree of their affection, in the context of the high air temperatures and the lack of precipitation on the last period, the government’s communication department reported.
Representatives of the local public authorities from the Cantemir, Cahul and Taraclia districts, as well as farmers from the region referred to the harvest of cereals and pointed out the pressing problems faced by the farmers at present. Among them, the main one consists in the lack of irrigation of lands, which directly hits the agricultural production and the profitableness in this region.
„The government knows the problems faced by the producers of cereals and we will continue backing this sector. We are looking for financial sources, in order to support the farmers. At the same time, we can ensure a rich harvest only through the implementation of the science and technology,’’ PM Dorin Recean said.
According to the prime minister, the current problems can be settled through investments in advanced irrigation technologies, extension of the assortment of crops, use of adapted hybrids and observance of the crop rotation. Also, among the medium- and long-term actions, which are to be undertaken in order to ensure a more efficient agricultural activity, there is the close cooperation between experts and agricultural communities, along with the adoption of legislative amendments which will back the farmers’ work. The PM encouraged the discussions and consultations through the agricultural chambers, as well as the taking of fundamental decisions according to economic and scientific calculations.
On 12-17 July, the wave of heat continued to extend and boost and the air temperatures reached even +40 Celsius degrees, amid the lack of precipitation. The Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry has recently set up a working group, made up also of researchers, in order to manage the challenges faced by the agricultural sector, as a result of the climate changes.
