Moldovan PM, Moldova's foreign partners have discussions on situation in energy sector

Chisinau, 16 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Dorin Recean today participated in a meeting of the sectoral Council for foreign assistance in the energy sector. The dialogue between the national authorities in the field and foreign partners was focused on the present situation in the energy sector, as well as the current needs of support, the government’s communication department has reported.    

The PM thanked for the significant contribution of the foreign partners to the carrying out of the projects which enhance Moldova’s energy independence. ‘’We thank you for solidarity. Moldova works, in order to become energy independent and the financial and technical assistance which we receive helps us modernize the infrastructure, enhance the energy efficiency and develop a green economy,’’ the prime minister said.    

The participants in the meeting unveiled the progress made in the projects on enhancing the energy efficiency of the buildings in the residential sector, the programmes of the National Centre for Sustainable Energy, as well as new initiatives for the development of the green energy. They also analyzed the stage of carrying out of the projects backed by the World Bank and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). In the context, the participants highlighted the progress made in the implementation of the strategic projects on interconnection of electricity networks, including of the ones on construction high-tension power lines between Moldova and Romania, as well as the modernization of power stations.     

According to data of the European Commission’s report for 2024, discussed at the meeting, Moldova was appreciated for the progress made in the energy sector, with significant advancement in the implementation of the Clean energy for all Europeans package. Another achievement is the advancement in the working out of the national energy strategy till 2050 and in the process of creation of an operator of electric energy market – essential aspects for the integration of the national energy market into the European system.  

Additional support is needed for the finishing of more strategic projects in the sector. It is about the creation of a central entity for storing reserves of oil products, elaboration of the National Plan on Territorial Development, due to include the new energy infrastructure projects locally (such as the electricity, gas and heating networks, wind and solar parks), as well as the development of the biogas sector, in the context of the requirements of sustainability for biomass and appearance of organized electric energy markets.      

The foreign partners highlighted the efficient cooperation with the authorities, the importance of the implementation of the reforms’ agenda and enforcement of all legislative amendments approved in order to achieve the strategic goal of European integration.     

Starting from today, the emergency state entered into force in Moldova for a period of 60 days. It will allow efficiently managing the situation in the energy sector and taking quick decisions, in order to attenuate the impact of an eventual ceasing of the deliveries of natural gas by Russia. The authorities urge the residents to rationally use the electric energy, in order to cut the consumption, especially during the peak hours.
