Chisinau, 18 Dec. /MOLDPRES/ - The cessation of gas supplies by the Russian Federation from 1 January 2025 despite the contractual provisions can be described as an action of energy blackmail that is part of Kremlin's scenarios to destabilize the Republic of Moldova. The opinion was expressed by Prime Minister Dorin Recean during "Secretele Puterii" show on Jurnal TV.
The Prime Minister claims that the authorities must prepare for the worst-case scenario, when the Russian Federation will not honor its contractual obligations and will cease natural gas supplies to the Transnistrian region. This action, according to Recean, is part of Russia's plan to destabilize the Republic of Moldova. "What is Russia's plan to destabilize the Republic of Moldova. First of all, not to deliver gas to the left bank of the Dniester River, or to deliver so much gas that there would be very, very little to create destabilization, after which these destabilizations would extend to the Security Zone. And what could happen there? More arrests of our people, banning children from attending Romanian schools or arresting some teachers. Also, to create difficult security situations in the Security Zone and so on, to create conflicts in the Security Zone, in such a way that by the parliamentary elections they would create a demand for someone, for a pro-Russian force to come to power and the final objective being the consolidation of military capacity on the left bank of the Nistru River. This is the plan, the worst one that awaits us in the coming period”, declared Dorin Recean.
The Prime Minister urged society to be in solidarity and assured that the authorities would not allow a humanitarian catastrophe on the left bank of the Nistru River.
From 1 January, the Russian Federation will no longer deliver natural gas to Ukraine and Russian gas will no longer reach the Republic of Moldova, although Gazprom is obliged to supply natural gas to our country. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denîs Shmîhal stated on Monday that Ukraine is willing to work on an agreement that would allow gas transit through its territory to Western Europe, but he ruled out any extension of the existing agreement with Russia.
