Forests planted on over 7,000 hectares in Moldova in 2024

Chisinau, 27 December /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu has summed up the national afforestation Programme this year. The head of state informed that, in 2024, forests had been planted and regenerated on an area of more than 7,000 hectares.

„This year too, we have planted and regenerated forests on over 7,000 hectares. Along with more than 15,000 volunteers and foresters, we planted 26.5 million trees: oak tree, ash tree, acacia, sycamore maple, elm tree, poplar tree and glade. We endowed the foresters with 14 sets of new equipment, including tractors, wood-chippers and rotators and signed an agreement of 200 million euros with the European Investments Bank for the modernization of the forestry sector. On the last days, I signed a decree, through which the contract on financing is ratified,’’ President Maia Sandu said.        

The head of state thanked all those over 15,000 volunteers and foresters involved, as well as the development partners, along with whom, 26.5 million trees were planted.   

„Together, we are #WoodGeneration and contribute to a sound environment for Moldova,’’ Maia Sandu said.   

The National Afforestation Programme, carried out under the aegis of President Maia Sandu, was launched in 2023. The action has the goal to afforest about 150,000 hectares of lands in the next ten years. All the country participants in plantings – state’s institutions, non-governmental organizations and all people interested.    

In all, this year, the authorities planned to plant over 7,300 hectares of wood. As many as 3,300 hectares of forests were planted in spring and the planting of another 4,000 hectares was planned in last autumn.

Presently, the afforested area occupies 11 per cent of Moldova’s territory, while the level of afforestation in EU is of 37.7 per cent.
