Chisinau, Nov. 4 /MOLDPRES/- The last polling stations in Sacramento, Seattle and Las Vegas in the United States and Vancouver in Canada closed today at 6 a.m. Moldovan time. According to preliminary data, 1,699,025 citizens or 54.31% of the voters included in the electoral lists participated in the polls.
The electoral legislation stipulates that the runoff election is declared valid if at least 20% of the number of people on the electoral lists participated. Under these conditions, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) confirms the validity of the election.
In the 231 polling stations set up abroad, including the three for postal voting, 328,855 voters exercised their constitutional right to vote, which is the highest number of voters since the organization of polling stations abroad. The most active turnout was registered in polling stations in Italy, Romania, France and the Russian Federation.
So far, 99.86% of the reports drawn up by polling stations' electoral bureaus have been processed. Thus, over 930 thousand voters or 55.41% voted for Maia Sandu, while Alexandr Stoianoglo received over 748 thousand votes, which represents 44.59%.
The Electoral Code stipulates that the candidate with the highest number of votes in the second round is declared elected.
At the same time, according to the Electoral Code, the CEC has five days to draw up a statement of the election results, which it will then submit to the Constitutional Court together with the report on the results of the presidential election.
